The Canon 60D is Canon's latest high-performing digital SLR, which is due to replace the Canon 50D when it launches in October 2010.
Replacing the EOS 50D, the EOS 60D is designed for photographers who want to take their skills to the next level, offering high performance, a series of creative features, a vari-angle LCD screen and enhanced ergonomics – empowering photography enthusiasts to capture outstanding stills and Full High Definition (HD) video for unique, creative results.
The 18Mp digital SLR is powered by the company's DIGIC 4 processor, allowing it to capture 5.3 JPEG images per second at full resolution. The 60D is also able to shoot in the more versatile RAW image format.
Adjustable LCD
The new Canon 60D has a 3-inch, hinged LCD that can be angled to allow users to compose shots on the screen using the Live View feature from a number of awkward angles. The screen's dot resolution measures 1,040k which should result in a very crisp representation of what the camera is seeing.
Canon describes the screen as being both anti-reflective and water-resistant.
The Canon 60D has a 1.6x crop factor. This means that when it's fitted with a lens offering a focal length of 100mm, the magnification will actually measure 160mm. The high-powered 60D has a regular ISO sensitivity between 100 and 6,400, however this can be extended to 12,800 with a reduced resolution. The 60D's autofocus system has 9 cross-type autofocus points.
In an unexpected move from Canon, the 60D features a variety of in-built filters to give users' photographs a particular effect. Grainy, Soft Focus, Miniature and Toy Camera are among the filters listed. There are also a number of customisable features that will allow users quick access to some of their more frequently used settings.
As with many new digital SLRs, the Canon 60D features HD video mode. It's capable of capturing clips at 1920x1080p, which is full HD. It can do so at 30, 25 and 24 frames per second (fps). For playing back clips in slow motion however, users may want to reduce the video resolution to 720p at which the camera is able to grasp 60 or 50fps.
SDXC memory card compatible
Moving and still images can be saved to an SD memory card and the 60D can recognise the new SDXC format, which has the potential to allow for up to 2TB of storage. Users can rate their photographs saved on the cards from one to five for quicker reviewing of their favourite shots
